In order to stimulate the development of technological solutions that meet the needs of the oil, gas and energy business, Petrobras launched yesterday (4) a public notice for Research, Development and Innovation (R, D & I) projects aimed at startups and innovative small businesses. The notice foresees the financing of up to 10 projects in six different areas, with values ranging from R$500 thousand to R$1.5 million, totaling R$ 10 million at this stage.
The announcement works through “challenges” proposed by Petrobras for the creation of products, vehicles or software, in areas such as robotics, artificial intelligence, energy storage, capture and use of CO2, among others. Entries can be made until September 22 on the website of the Brazilian Micro and Small Business Support Service (Sebrae). Participants will have up to two years to develop their projects.
“The company will have up to 24 months to develop the project. But if they think they can do it in less time, that’s okay. If you think it is feasible to do it in 12 months, if you have a good idea that will bring value to us, the company, and if it is feasible, you can compete without any problem,” said the engineer to Agência Brasil.
According to Ramos, the result of the first stage is expected to come out in mid-October. The impact of the proposed solution for Petrobras’ business, the consistency and feasibility of the project, including ease of deployment of the solution, technical capacity of the team, degree of innovation, level of technological maturity and potential for scale gains will be evaluated.
“Some stronger challenges have been posed, because we have a notion that there are many companies that can develop [the solutions], which already have a certain degree of maturity, but it is not yet the ready solution. Just like there are others that are even more challenging in terms of maturity but may be at a lower maturity [to be resolved over time], ”said Ramos.
“Challenges” include creating a small, remote-controlled or low-cost automated submarine to assist with subsea inspection activities, developing software to increase the storage efficiency of energy produced from solar or wind power, and even a system for management of immersive images (360º photos and videos) and interactive navigation (street view) to assist in the planning process and platform interventions.
“We have the opportunity to select as many projects that are already in the face of the goal and that only need final development, as those that are in the laboratory scale and still need to be taken to a prototype scale. If it has potential, it is also considered a success for us to have a project that increases the maturity of technology,” he said.
In addition to the financial resources, the startups or small companies selected will also be able to help overcome the challenges of the early years, such as financial support, interaction with Petrobras staff, business training, and the ability to generate more innovative products, services and business models. In the case of completion of the challenges and development of solutions with scale, Ramos said that the announcement brings the specifications about what happens.
“The rules on the result properties are well defined in the announcement. Petrobras will not have any participation in the company’s capital stock, we will not be partners of the company. The second thing is that whatever is developed throughout the project, if it is possible of protection, will be shared, will have a shared intellectual property in commonality ”said.
The initiative, developed in partnership with the Brazilian Micro and Small Business Support Service (Sebrae), is part of the Petrobras Conexões para Inovação program and was created to bring the company closer to startups. In total, the program will last five years. It is expected that other public notices will be released in the future. The total investment forecast is R$ 60 million.
“We mapped internal demands for the need for technological solutions in Petrobras’s business areas and we had more demands than we are putting in the notice. This gives entrepreneurs a good perspective that we should have another announcement after this one,” said Ramos.
