Hub to help startups was launched in Belo Horizonte
The Brazilian Ministry of Tourism, in partnership with the World Tourism Organization (WTO), announced earlier this week (3), during the National Tourism Week in Belo Horizonte, the arrival of Wakalua in Brazil, a global innovation center for tourism that drives development through public-private partnerships in 150 countries.
Wakalua was established in 2019, headquartered in Madrid, Spain, and involves startups, investors, corporations, governments, non-governmental institutions and academia linked to the tourism industry.
Wakalua’s first major initiative was the Tourism Startup Competition, which is currently in its second edition.
Actions
In its first stage, the Wakalua Brasil project foresees three actions in the country. The first of these is the Tourism Tech Adventures (TTA) in Brazil, a forum that brings together actors from the innovation ecosystem to boost entrepreneurship and investment in tourism, which will take place in Florianópolis in April 2020.
The second initiative will be the holding of a national tourism startup competition. Winners will be ranked directly for the semifinal of the 3rd edition of the global edition OMT Tourism Startup Competition in the first half of 2020.
The third action will be to define the implementation of Wakalua in Brazil, including the location of the hub headquarters and its program of activities, which should be completed in the second half of 2020.
National Tourism Week
Promoted by the Ministry of Tourism, the 1st National Tourism Week, to be held until December 6, in Belo Horizonte, aims to discuss initiatives to strengthen the tourism sector.
According to the ministry, the area has 52 economic activities, and directly and indirectly employs seven million Brazilians and represents 8.1% of the national economy.
