The fall in imports faster than the reduction in exports made the Brazilian trade balance hit a record-breaking surplus in August. Last month, the country exported US$ 6.609 billion more than it imported, the best result for the month since the beginning of the historical series, in 1989.
Both exports and imports fell last month. In August, the country sold US$ 17.741 billion abroad, with a decrease of 5.5% by the criterion of the daily average in relation to the same month last year. Imports, however, fell further, totaling US$ 11.133 billion, a reduction of 25.1% also by the daily average.
With the August result, the trade balance accumulates a surplus of US$ 36.594 billion in the first eight months of the year. This is the third best result in the historical series for the period, losing from January to August 2017 (US$ 48.1 billion surplus) and 2018 (US$ 36.7 billion surplus).
In 2020, exports totaled US$ 138.633 billion, a decrease of 6.6% in comparison with the same period of 2019 by the daily average. Imports totaled US$ 102.039 billion, a decrease of 25.1% by the same criterion.
Most of the increase in the balance in August is explained by the fall in imports from the extractive industry, which decreased 59.51% in relation to the same month last year, and from the manufacturing industry, whose purchases from abroad shrank 23.78%. On the export side, sales from the manufacturing industry fell 14.2%, and sales from the extractive industry fell 8.6%. In contrast, agricultural exports rose 32.64%.

A queda nas importações em ritmo maior que a redução das exportações fez a balança comercial registrar superávit recorde em agosto. No mês passado, o país exportou US$ 6,609 bilhões a mais do que importou, o melhor resultado para o mês desde o início da série histórica, em 1989.
Tanto as exportações como as importações caíram no mês passado. Em agosto, o país vendeu US$ 17,741 bilhões para o exterior, com recuo de 5,5% pelo critério da média diária em relação ao mesmo mês do ano passado. As importações, no entanto, caíram mais, somando US$ 11,133 bilhões, redução de 25,1% também pela média diária.
Com o resultado de agosto, a balança comercial acumula superávit de US$ 36,594 bilhões nos oito primeiros meses do ano. Esse é o terceiro melhor resultado da série histórica para o período, perdendo para janeiro a agosto de 2017 (superávit de US$ 48,1 bilhões) e de 2018 (superávit de US$ 36,7 bilhões).
No acumulado de 2020, as exportações somam US$ 138,633 bilhões, retração de 6,6% na comparação com o mesmo período de 2019 pela média diária. As importações totalizam US$ 102,039 bilhões, recuo de 25,1% pelo mesmo critério.
A maior parte da alta do saldo em agosto é explicada pela queda da importação da indústria extrativa, que recuou 59,51% em relação ao mesmo mês do ano passado, e da indústria de transformação, cujas compras do exterior encolheram 23,78%. Do lado das exportações, as vendas da indústria de transformação caíram 14,2%, e as vendas da indústria extrativa recuaram 8,6%. Em contrapartida, as exportações da agropecuária subiram 32,64%.
