Ceará assumed its role as a world player in the telecommunications sector when it received the Angonap Data Center, from the multinational Angola Cables, inaugurated on April 16, in Fortaleza. The inauguration consolidated the technological hub planned by the Government of Ceará, which, together with Air France/KLM/GOL and port of CIPP/Port of Rotterdam, form a set of hubs to leverage development in the State. Governor Camilo Santana attended the ceremony along with the company’s global CEO, António Nunes, the Minister of Telecommunications and Information Technologies of Angola, José Carvalho da Rocha, and Mayor Roberto Cláudio.
Angola Cables invested about US$ 300 million in the construction of the Data Center, built in a 3,000 m² area at Praia do Futuro, and in the installation of Sacs and Monet submarine cables, which connect two regions with great economic potential via fiber – Americas and Africa, generating an alternative route of connectivity with the United States and the Asian continent. The Sacs leave from the city of Luanda, in Angola, and arrives in Fortaleza, traveling 6,200 kilometers under the Atlantic Ocean, and the Monet, with 10 thousand km of extension, connects the cities of Santos and Fortaleza in Brazil and Miami in USA. The speed of data transmission by the cables is 63 milliseconds, faster than a blink of an eye. Through the cables, the companies installed in Ceará, from giants of the sector to the small providers, will have a better connection and stimulate the economy and the creation of qualified jobs.
Privileged position
The geographic location of Ceará has been a preponderant factor in the consolidation of the state’s three hubs. Its position has been considered a strategy for connecting other parts of the world with Latin America. Proof of this is that Fortaleza is the second largest city in the world with more submarine cables – 12 in total – behind only Fujairah, in the United Arab Emirates, which owns 13. According to an IBGE survey, the Northeast region presents the third largest contribution of information and communication technology segments in Brazil.
António Nunes, CEO of Angola Cables, said that the choice of the capital of Ceará had influence of its position in the map, but the work done by the public power to foment the development of the telecommunications sector also weighed. “Fortaleza is a natural hub for submarine cables. When we did our site planning in Brazil where we were to bring our cables, Fortaleza was the most suitable place, because we could later, through a Data Center like this, interconnect with other submarine cables that are already here. Parallel to this we have had a very pleasant surprise because the State and Fortaleza have promoted much the development of the digital ecosystem and therefore Fortaleza becomes in the Northeast a very important point of this digital economy,” said the CEO.
This potential reflects in Latin American figures in the Data Center market, which moved US$ 2.87 billion in 2016. Latin America’s data centers are expected to reach US $ 4.37 billion in 2021. Brazil concentrates 45% of all existing data storage centers in Latin America and accounted for 47.6% of revenues in the region in 2016.
Economy
The digital age has transformed society’s customs and opened up new ways of doing business. This prism of transformation and the arrival of equipment of this magnitude accredits the capital of Ceará to a growth of opportunities in the near future, believes Roberto Cláudio. “This new wave of e-commerce, all the communications embedded in the mobile phone to deal with the day-to-day of your consumption pattern, a new perspective including telecommunications and the use of information technology to generate employment and income, this opens a new scenario, new opportunities. The basic principle of this is connectivity. Here we are not only receiving more fiber optic cables. We’re doing more than that when we get that investment. We are gaining a cutting edge Data Center, with unique safety standards and speed,” said the mayor of Fortaleza.

O Ceará assumiu seu papel de protagonista mundial no setor das telecomunicações ao receber o Data Center Angonap, da multinacional Angola Cables, inaugurado no dia 16 de abril, em Fortaleza. O momento consolidou o hub tecnológico planejado pelo Governo do Ceará, que, ao lado do centro de conexões aéreo da Air France/KLM/GOL e portuário CIPP/Porto de Roterdã, formam a trinca de hubs para alavancar o desenvolvimento no Estado. O governador Camilo Santana participou da solenidade ao lado do CEO global da empresa, António Nunes, do ministro das Telecomunicações e Tecnologias de Informação de Angola, José Carvalho da Rocha, e do prefeito Roberto Cláudio.
A empresa Angola Cables investiu cerca de US$ 300 milhões na construção do Data Center, edificado em uma área de 3.000 m² na Praia do Futuro, e na instalação dos cabos submarinos Sacs e Monet, que ligam via fibra óptica duas regiões com grande potencial econômico – Américas e África, gerando uma rota alternativa de conectividade com os Estados Unidos e o continente asiático. O Sacs sai da cidade de Luanda, na Angola, e chega a Fortaleza, percorrendo 6.200 quilômetros sob o oceano Atlântico, e o Monet, com 10 mil km de extensão, interliga as cidades de Santos e Fortaleza, no Brasil, e Miami, nos EUA. Por meio dos cabos, as empresas instaladas no Ceará, desde gigantes do ramo, até os pequenos provedores, terão conexão de melhor qualidade e estimulando a economia e a criação de empregos qualificados.
Posição privilegiada
A localização geográfica do Ceará tem sido fator preponderante na consolidação da trinca de hub’s. Sua posição vem sendo considerada estratégia para a conexão de outras partes do mundo com a America Latina. Uma prova disso é que Fortaleza é a segunda cidade no mundo com mais cabos submarinos – ao todo 12 – ficando atrás somente de Fujairah, nos Emirados Árabes Unidos, que possui 13. De acordo com levantamento feito pelo IBGE, a região do Nordeste apresenta a terceira maior contribuição de segmentos das tecnologias da informação e comunicação no Brasil.
António Nunes, CEO da Angola Cables, afirmou que a escolha da capital cearense teve influência de sua posição no mapa, mas o trabalho feito pelo poder público no sentido de fomentar o desenvolvimento do setor de telecomunicações também pesou. “Fortaleza é um hub natural de cabos submarinos. Quando nós fizemos nosso planejamento de local no Brasil onde deveríamos aportar nossos cabos, Fortaleza foi o local mais adequado, pelo fato de podermos, posteriormente, através de um Data Center como esse, nos interligarmos com outros cabos submarinos que já estejam aqui. Paralelamente a isso temos tido uma surpresa muito agradável porque o Estado e Fortaleza têm promovido muito o desenvolvimento do ecossistema digital e por isso Fortaleza passa a ser no Nordeste um ponto muito importante dessa economia digital”, confidenciou o CEO.
Esse potencial reflete nos números latino-americanos no mercado de Data Centers, que movimentou US$ 2,87 bilhões em 2016. A estimativa é que os centros de dados da América Latina cheguem a faturar US$ 4,37 bilhões em 2021. A era digital tem transformado costumes da sociedade e aberto novas maneiras de se fazer negócios. Esse prisma de transformação e a chegada de um equipamento desse porte credencia a capital cearense a um crescimento de oportunidades em um futuro próximo, acredita Roberto Cláudio. “Essa onda nova do comércio eletrônico, de todas as comunicações embarcadas no celular para você lidar com o dia a dia do seu padrão de consumo, uma nova perspectiva inclusive de telecomunicações e do uso da tecnologia da informação para gerar emprego e renda, isso abre um novo cenário, novas oportunidades. O princípio básico disso é a conectividade. Aqui a gente não está recebendo só mais cabos de fibra óptica. A gente tá fazendo mais do que isso ao ganharmos esse investimento. Estamos ganhando um Data Center de ponta, com padrão de segurança e velocidade únicos”, ressaltou o prefeito de Fortaleza.
